Down at Troop F, in the Catskills, BCI separated Ed and Dawn. Several investigators sat with Ed in one room and talked things through—the guy didn’t know anything about the Susan Fassett murder, that was clear right away with a few questions.

Karic sat with Dawn in another room. She was still completely composed. Karic allowed her to smoke as they sat together and began to go over things.

Karic could tell right away that Dawn was smarter than she looked. She understood how things worked. She was able to articulate her stories in a way that impressed the seasoned interrogator.

“It was very easy to talk to her,” Karic said later. “You didn’t have to bring the language down at all, or talk in circles. She knew what was going on. She knew exactly what I was saying at all times and was able to respond.”

Karic asked Dawn to start at the beginning. How she and Fred had met. He was curious, as were several of his colleagues, as to how Fred Andros and Dawn Silvernail had hooked up.

And the story Dawn told surely didn’t disappoint.
